River Kansabati in the state of West Bengal has been flowing from the unknown past of the prehistoric period till today. The river in the long past history was known as Kapisha mentioned in the epic 'Raghuvansam' by Mahakabi Kalidas. The river is mentioned as Kansbas in Madla Panji of Utkal and as Kangshanadi in Dwija Madhav's epic 'Chandimangal'. The history and heritage of this river's contribution dates back to the earliest stages of human civilization in the distant past. There is profound influence of the River on the creative expressions of artists and architects through history. Scattered excavations in the vast river basin at various times have yielded rich artefacts. Pre-medieval pottery, inscriptions, stone carvings etc. have been found in the basin. Artefacts of Pala-Sena period, masts of large vessels and fragments of boats recall the rich history and heritage of the region. Many artefacts like ancient Vishnu idols, Buddha idols, Sanchistupa replicas, various handicrafts recognize the rich cultural heritage. Ancient terracotta temples, the Garbari of the Kings and other ancient construction in the river basin are the wonderful example of architecture influenced by the enchanting river.
The development of riverine Buddhist culture is acknowledged through Hiuen Tsang, Fahien's description when they came to Tamralipta. Ancient Buddhist statues and related artefacts are still found in the river basin. The history of abundance of flowers and fruits of the river basin is about one and a half thousand years old as Hiuen Tsang described. Thus Kansabati River greatly influenced the everyday life of the basin religiously, economically, socially, culturally. The people made various handicrafts of grass-leaf wrap, pottery, clay idol, metal tools, fireworks, wooden furniture, bamboo stuff, regional foods like ‘gahana bori’, ‘alur chop’, ‘batasa’ etc. for their daily needs. The happiness and sorrow of life, the struggle of life in the Kansabati river basin emerge in their folk culture. Thus Kirtan, Baul, Pot Song, Kabigan, folk song etc have been greatly influenced by the enchanting river. Thus the ancient River Kansabati left a lasting legacy that continues to influence art, architecture and culture even today.
